DONATING YOUR CLUTTER

Your clutter may be someone else's treasure. It's all in the eyes of the beholder. Whether you have an older model computer, a pair of tennis shoes that no longer fits, clothes that your kids have outgrown, a box of toys, a used refrigerator or other working appliance, it can all be donated to help someone in need. If you're ready to donate but don't know where to find an appropriate organization, here are a few in the Southern California area that will accept your donatable items with great appreciation.

I do not specifically endorse any of these organizations. This is strictly a source of information for those who may not know where to start looking. Most donations are tax-deductible. Please check with the organization and with your accountant.

The listings below are in alphabetical order. At the time they were listed, all phone numbers and websites were reliable. If they no longer are, please notify BOB FARKAS, THE CLUTTER WIZARD by e-mailing me. If you'd like to notify me of other worthy organizations e-mail me with their name, address, phone number and information about who they primarily help and what they will and won't accept.

Thank you.

For official Goodwill Donation Guidelines go to their website's Donation Guidelines Page.

Although the Goodwill Southern California website says that they no longer repair items and asks that you donate items in gently used, workable condition, a manager at a Santa Clarita Valley donation center and thrift store told me that they take virtually everything whether or not it needs repair. I was told that what they can't repair they sell for parts. Their website also says that in order to comply with environmental hazard and public safety rulings they do not accept mattresses and other such items. The manager I mentioned above however told me that they do indeed accept mattresses. The manager said that they simply sell the mattresses to a mattress refurbishing company and that they re-sell these refurbished mattresses at their Goodwill store. The only thing this manager said they don't accept is large appliances like refrigerators, ovens and dishwashers or hazardous waste items. So I suggest that you check with your local Goodwill donation center to see what they will and will not accept since their website has certain guidelines but their individual donation centers and thrift stores may accept more of your stuff than their website says they will. Goodwill says they no longer offer a pick-up service.
